The scandal which rocked Panama in April 2012 caused by corruption allegations made by an associate of Italy’s former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi, involving President Ricardo Martinelli and his entourage, has claimed its first casualty. Remarkably Balbina Herrera, a key figure in the opposition Partido Revolucionario Democrático (PRD) who last week received a three-year prison sentence, was not one of the officials implicated but rather was convicted of leaking supposed conversations between President Martinelli and Berlusconi’s associate, Valter Lavitola. The ruling, which comes as the case is under renewed scrutiny amid fresh allegations involving Martinelli family members, has revived concerns regarding the state of the judiciary in the country.
