COSTA RICA: Shake-up to presidential race

Johnny Araya, the former San José mayor (1998-2001; 2003-2013), and presidential candidate for the ruling Partido Liberación Nacional (PLN), is on course to win the 2 February 2014 contest. The current frontrunner received a major boost after his chief rival, Rodolfo Hernández Gómez of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (PUSC), quit on 9 October, days ahead of the 18 October deadline to register candidacies.
