The president of the national assembly, Diosdado Cabello, approved a special commission this week to study the request of President Nicolás Maduro for an enabling law. This would confer special powers on Maduro to issue decrees for 12 months to combat corruption. The commission comprises 18 deputies, all from the ruling Partido Socialista Unido de Venezuela (PSUV). This despite the fact that the opposition controls 40% of the 165 seats in the assembly. The commission will draw up a report which will be presented to the full assembly for approval.End of preview - This article contains approximately 452 words.
