BOLIVIA: Labour unions endorse Morales for 2014

President Evo Morales and his ruling Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) have secured the support of Bolivia’s main labour federation, Central Obrera Boliviana (COB), ahead of the October 2014 general election. While a traditional MAS ally, the COB has had run-ins with the Morales government over issues like the minimum wage increases and the gasolinazo (President Morales’ failed attempt to scrap state fuel subsidies in December 2010), prompting the COB to launch a new party, Partido de los Trabajadores (PT), in January 2013. For the time being, the COB appears to have been won over by Morales’ decision to decree a second annual pay bonus (aguinaldo) for Bolivian workers, a move that has ruffled private sector feathers and been slammed by Morales’ detractors as blatant electioneering.
