Farc’s on-off ceasefire. On 8 December the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) announced a 30-day unilateral ceasefire to take effect from 15 December. This followed an attack with explosives attributed by the authorities to the Farc, against a police station in Inzá, Cauca, that killed five members of the military and a police officer. The Farc spokesman at the peace talks in Havana, ‘Pedro Catatumbo’ (Jorge Torres Victoria), called on all guerrillas to abide by the ceasefire and fire only in defence. He also expressed the hope that the government would reciprocate by suspending military operations. As on previous occasions the government made it clear there would be no ceasefire until a final peace agreement was in place.
