Néstor Kirchner will stand in the mid-term legislative elections on
28 June. Kirchner left it as late as possible to register his candidacy for a
seat in the lower chamber. He will top the government's slate of candidates in
the province of Buenos Aires, Argentina's largest electoral district, followed
by the provincial governor Daniel Scioli. It is a big gamble. Kirchner is
staking his political capital on the preservation of the slim majority enjoyed
by his wife, President Cristina Fernández, in the lower chamber. If he fails, it
will strike a bigger blow against the Kirchnerista project than the simple loss
of the majority, putting paid to his ambition of succeeding his wife in
2011.End of preview - This article contains approximately 689 words.
