GUATEMALA: Police chief fired over drug disappearance

The interior minister, Raúl Antonio Velásquez Ramos, made good his pledge to overhaul the Policí­a Nacional Civil (PNC) last week. His hand was forced: the disappearance of 117 kilos of cocaine from a shipment seized by police authorities and subsequent allegations of involvement in narco-trafficking left him little choice but to fire PNC chief Porfirio Pérez Paniagua, his deputy, Rolando Mendoza and other senior officials.
