The justice minister, Tarso Genro,
suggested this week there would be a crisis between the executive and the
judiciary if the supreme court overruled his decision to grant political asylum
to Cesare Battisti, a former member of a leftwing terrorist cell who is sought
for extradition by Italy. The supreme court seemed to be taking a view that
Battisti's asylum was granted illegally, but its ruling was suspended after a
sympathetic judge asked for more time to review the proceedings. This could
allow President Lula da Silva enough time to manoeuvre in favour of Battisti:
following the recent death of Carlos Direito, Lula will be able to appoint an
allied judge to the supreme court to counterbalance opposition to Battisti's
