The Uruguayan public cast an intriguing verdict on the gaffes of the
presidential frontrunner, José Mujica, the candidate of the ruling Frente Amplio
(FA). On the one hand, it withdrew support from Mujica: all three of the latest
opinion polls, conducted after the recent publication of a book
Pepe.Coloquios showcasing his tactlessness, saw him fall. But, this did not
translate into a boost for the candidate of the main opposition Blancos, Luis
Alberto Lacalle. Quite the contrary. Lacalle fell by as much as Mujica in the
polls - a damning indictment of his party's efforts to exploit Mujica's verbal
incontinence. Instead, there was a surge in the number of undecided
