BRAZIL: Rio to receive investments to host 2016 Olympics

Rio de Janeiro was chosen to host the 2016 Olympic Games, following a successful campaign headed by President Lula da Silva. The Brazilian authorities presented an intelligent US$14.4bn investment programme that made the most of existing sporting facilities and the use of Rio's natural attractions to host the sporting events. As a result, the bulk of investments can be allocated to address the city's main weaknesses - transport, pollution and public security -   in order to bequeath a lasting legacy to its residents following decades of neglect that left Brazil's most famous and, arguably, beautiful city scarred. But, Brazil's enduring problem with corruption could undermine the plan: unfulfilled promises for the 2007 Pan-American Games serve as a reminder of the obstacles ahead.
