Indigenous tribes have started negotiations to launch unified
candidacies in order to obtain an unparalleled representation in congress, as
well as in the legislatures of at least 19 of Brazil's 27 states, in next year's
general elections. Brazilian Indians hope this will help them to become more
prominent in the political decision-making process to better defend their
interests. Currently, they depend on the National Indigenous Peoples Foundation
(Funai, in the Portuguese acronym), a government agency, and religious
