COSTA RICA: Court delivers historic verdict against ex president

A San José court this week sentenced former president Rafael Angel Calderón Fournier (1990-4) to five years in prison for embezzlement. It is the first time an ex president has been imprisoned for corruption in Costa Rica, and the verdict was hailed by civil society groups, the media and politicians alike as a major step forward in the battle against impunity. It also puts paid to Calderón's bid for the presidency on the ticket of the Partido Unidad Social Cristiana (Pusc), in elections on 7 February next year.
