A total of 21 people were arrested in eight Colombian cities,
including Bogotá, this week in the biggest anti-drugs operation in a decade. The
jubilant head of the national police, General Óscar Naranjo, said the success of
the sweep owed in large part to the purging of the police force in recent years.
He said operations of this kind have often failed in the past because of
official corruption and tip-offs. He bragged that Operación Fronteras was so
