Ecuador’s dissident indigenous and trade union movements kept the pressure up on the government led by President Rafael Correa with yet another protest march on 16 September. The march in Quito and elsewhere in Ecuador - planned by the indigenous organisation, Conaie, and the country’s main trade union, Frente Unitario de Trabajadores (FUT) - was peaceful, unlike the general strike on 13 August, which resulted in some 60 arrests in the capital alone. Correa, once again, downplayed the significance of the march but he will continue to feel the pressure in the months ahead, with the economy in a tailspin due to low oil prices and no immediate prospect of a revival.End of preview - This article contains approximately 1389 words.
