NICARAGUA: First ‘public consultation’ on Canal EIS

Last week the governmental committee for Nicaragua’s ‘Gran Canal’ held its first public consultation in order to present the environmental and social impact study (EIS) carried out by the UK-based consultancy firm, Environmental Resources Management (ERM), on the US$50bn project. With continued protests taking place in response to the proposed initiative –for which China’s Hong Kong Nicaragua Canal Development Company (HKND) received the build/operate concession in 2013 – the latest meeting has yet to assuage transparency concerns regarding its impact.
