PARAGUAY: Lugo granted 30 days to tackle EPP

President Fernando Lugo declared a “state of exception" for 30 days in five departments on 23 April in a bid to crack down on the Ejército del Pueblo Paraguayo (EPP). Lugo sought congressional approval for the measure, after one police officer, two farm labourers and a guard were killed in an ambush, believed to have been carried out by the EPP, two days earlier near an estate straddling the border between San Pedro and Concepción.
