The Aedes Aegpyti mosquito is one of the deadliest animals in the world. It carries dengue, yellow fever, chikungunya and zika, a virus common in Africa and Asia but until last year unknown in Latin America. Since zika was first detected in north-eastern Brazil in May last year, it has spread to a further 14 Latin American countries. Brazilian scientists believe the virus is responsible for a surge in microcephaly, a type of brain damage in babies.
