BRAZIL: Supreme court upholds Amnesty Law

Brazil's supreme court voted by seven to two this week to uphold the 1979 Amnesty Law, which granted “ample, general and unrestricted amnesty to political and related crimes" committed during the military dictatorship (1964-1985). The court ruled that the law could not be questioned retroactively, leading to criticism from human rights activists and international bodies.
