DOMINICAN REPUBLIC-REGION: Twitter a political revolution or passing fad?

Sharp verbal exchanges on the social networking site Twitter are not unusual but when they involve a first lady they attract considerable media attention. The first lady of the Dominican Republic, Margarita Cedeño, was caught up in a spat last week with Dominican 'Twitterers' after she tweeted that investment in education would be increasing but attempted to justify why it would fall beneath the 4% of GDP established by law. She came under heavy and sustained fire but responded to the criticism, rebuking one user for being “disrespectful". The episode raises intriguing questions about the use of social networking sites as a political tool.
