Panama's main umbrella trade union group Frenadeso will form a
political party in the New Year. The move is indicative of the growing emergence
of the union group, galvanised by its victory over the miscalculated attempt by
pro-business President Ricardo Martinelli at weakening the sector through the
controversial 'Law 30' (see sidebar). More long-term Frenadeso's move
is a challenge to the nominally leftist opposition Partido Revolucionario
Democrático (PRD) which, while still Panama's largest party, shows little sign
of recovering from its heavy electoral defeat in May 2009.End of preview - This article contains approximately 477 words.
