COLOMBIA-ECUADOR: Santos steers ship of state into safer waters

By any standards it has been a remarkable first 100 days in power for Colombia's President Juan Manuel Santos. The full restoration of diplomatic relations with Ecuador on 26 November followed the re-establishment of ties with Venezuela in August. Sandwiched between the two was the crushing blow dealt to the Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) in late September when the guerrilla group's military strategist, Jorge Briceño Suárez ('Mono Jojoy'), was killed in a surgical air strike by the military.
