It is unlikely that the Peruvian electorate will end up choosing
between “AIDS and terminal cancer" as Peru's Nobel literature laureate and
former presidential candidate, Mario Vargas Llosa, memorably described the
option of a second round run-off between either Ollanta Humala or Keiko
Fujimori. But the fact that he publicly went on record this week as saying he
would campaign vigorously in a likely run-off next June if he felt the
continuation of the current economic model was at risk suggests he believes
there is a strong chance one or other of them will secure a berth in the second
