Significance: The change to the party statutes clears the way for the finance minister, José Antonio Meade Kuribreña, to seek the PRI presidential candidacy in 2018. Meade is not a member of the PRI and served in the previous federal government of the right-wing opposition Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) led by Felipe Calderón Hinojosa (2006-2012). The PRI party statutes previously stated that membership of the PRI for 10 years was a prerequisite for aspiring presidential candidates. But that requirement will now be waived.
