In brief: Chile

Chile: Chile’s environmental agency, the Superintendencia del Medio Ambiente (SMA), announced it had ordered Canadian mining company Barrick Gold to close the Chilean side of the Pascua-Lama mining project, which straddles the border with Argentina. The SMA has reduced the fine for past violations to US$11.52m. Barrick Gold began working in the area in 2014, but was unable to complete the project following a conflict with local communities in the Huasco Valley, located in Chile's northern Atacama Region.
