On 2 April, Jacqueline Van Rysselberghe, an ambitious politician from
the right-wing Unión Democráta Independiente (UDI), resigned as governor of
Biobío. The UDI, which is the senior partner in the ruling right-wing alliance,
is unhappy that congressmen from President Sebastián Piñera's Renovación
Nacional (RN), the junior partner, had refused to back Van Rysselberghe. She may
yet face a congressional investigation into her doings as governor of Biobío in
the wake of the earthquake that hit the region on 27 February 2011.
