* Fábio Januário, the CEO of Brazilian engineering firm Odebrecht, has announced that the firm has signed a new service provision contract with Furnas, a subsidiary of Brazil’s state-owned electricity firm, Eletrobras. The contract for modernising the Santa Cruz thermoelectric power plant in Rio de Janeiro state is the first government contract won by Odebrecht since it became implicated in the major bribes-for-government contracts corruption scandal uncovered by the Brazilian authorities in 2014. Following the discovery of the scandal, Odebrecht, Brazil’s largest civil engineering and construction firm, was temporarily banned from bidding for government contracts in Brazil. However, this ban was lifted last year and Januário said that Odebrecht won a public tender for the Santa Cruz project staged at the end of last year.
