BRAZIL: Gang raids Rio prison in show of power

For all the escalation of army-backed police action against the drug gangs that dominate Rio's favelas, these remained strong enough to mount a major raid on a Rio prison in late May - a partly successful jailbreak that developed into a pitched battle between inmates belonging to rival gangs. The result was the worst instance of prison violence in seven years, with a toll of 39 dead.
