* Felipe Salto, the executive director of the Instituição Fiscal Independente (IFI), an economic entity within Brazil’s federal senate, believes that President-elect Jair Bolsonaro will struggle to reverse the state’s fiscal deficit during his four-year term (which begins on 1 January 2019). As reported by national daily O Estado de São Paulo, the IFI calculates that even if the economic reforms proposed by Bolsonaro’s team are successfully passed, Brazil will not record a positive primary balance before 2023.
