CENTRAL AMERICA: Mobile phone theft becomes regional epidemic

Central America has not only become a major transit route for the mobile phone theft industry that has grown to huge proportions further south, mainly in Colombia, but has also sprouted a similar criminal enterprise of its own. Fuelling this is the inordinately high cost of new mobile phones in the area, which makes the resale of stolen phones a very lucrative proposition. Bedevilling the solution is the fact that members of Central American police forces themselves deal in stolen mobile phones.
