Mexican house of cards: the energy sector regulator drama

Regulatory agencies are a product of the failed neoliberal model and only serve private economic interests. This is Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s position. Therefore, since assuming office in December 2018, he has spent quite some time attacking the Comisión Reguladora de Energía (CRE) energy sector regulator and trying to limit its role. The López Obrador government has cut the CRE’s 2019 budget by 31.1% and the agency has had to lay off more than 365 employees.
