Indigenous authorities from Colombia’s south-western department of Cauca declared a state of emergency on 11 August and permanent assembly following a series of deadly attacks against indigenous leaders and members of the indigenous guard. This wave of attacks comes amid persistent violence against social leaders and former members of the demobilised Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia (Farc) guerrillas across the country, something for which the government led by President Iván Duque has come under fire.
