BRAZIL | Backlash against Rio police. A spate of killings of police officers in Rio de Janeiro in mid-March has given rise to speculation about a backlash from the drug gangs the police have been targeting in tandem with their campaign against the 'militias' that have displaced the gangs from some of the favelas they used to control [SSR-07-02]. Between 8 and 16 March, 12 police officers were killed; five of them while on duty and the rest either when they were returning home or at their homes.
