Guyana

Introduction

Guyana has never been a typical country of the English-speaking Caribbean, and it is about to become even less typical. On 9 May, the BBC ran a headline asking: “Will Guyana soon be the richest country in the world?”. Maybe not, but it looks certain to be the richest country in the Caribbean. The latest estimates put its as-yet-untapped oil reserves at 6bn barrels with much more to be discovered. First oil is due to begin flowing in early 2020, with oil production climbing to 750,000 barrels per day (bpd) by 2025.
