Mexico: López Obrador’s First Year
No improvement
Although previously he made claims that security was improving, in his state of the nation address López Obrador admitted that this was not the case and acknowledged that it remains one of his key challenges. Although it would have been difficult for any administration to shrink crime levels in less than a year, the main issue of concern is that the upward trend in violent crime remains unabated. Indeed, 2019 has so far been the most violent year of the last two decades, not only regarding incidence of intentional homicides, but also other serious crimes such as kidnapping, extorsion, burglaries, and armed robberies.
