Curbing abuses

Another one of López Obrador’s main campaign promises in this area was to improve Mexico’s human rights record. With this objective, he proposed to give an amnesty to jailed individuals, typically from deprived backgrounds, whose circumstances led them to commit a crime or made them unable to obtain legal support. The proposal was controversial as its detractors feared that it would lead to impunity and to manipulating crime incidence figures.
