PERU: Health strategy at risk of collapse

As May came to a close, Peru had registered 4,506 deaths from coronavirus (Covid-19), at a per capita rate second only to Brazil and Ecuador in Latin America. But as the leaders of these countries face substantial domestic criticism for their pandemic response strategies, President Martín Vizcarra’s combination of strict quarantine controls and generous emergency spending saw his approval rating soar. Pollsters Ipsos reported a 35 point surge to an astonishing 87% in March, even holding steady as the death toll climbed, at 80% as of 21 May.
