In brief: Chile’s unemployment remains near record high

* Chile’s national statistics institute (INE) has published the latest employment figures, according to which the unemployment rate for the June-August rolling quarter dropped slightly to 12.9%, following the record high of 13.1% registered in May-July. The unemployment rate rose by 5.3 percentage points compared with June-August 2019. President Sebastián Piñera recently announced a plan to subsidise employment in the country, with the aim of supporting economic recovery and recovering jobs lost due to the crisis caused by the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic, as well as creating up to 1m new jobs.
