GUATEMALA: Giammattei’s gestures fail to convince

President Alejandro Giammattei and Vice President Guillermo Castillo recently declared a message of unity. This suggests an end to divisions which had intensified over the 2021 budget proposal (since retracted) and its aftermath [WR-20-47], prompting human rights ombudsman Jordán Rodas to warn of a governability crisis [WR-20-48]. The announcement followed various gestures made by Giammattei aimed not only at placating Castillo but also the public. Ongoing protests in the capital, Guatemala City, as well as other parts of the country, demanding the resignation of Giammattei among others, suggest that these actions are falling short.
