COSTA RICA-NICARAGUA: San José strengthens its border defences

While Costa Rican president Laura Chinchilla and her foreign minister, René Castro, toured Europe in what Nicaragua has described as an 'ignoble' bid to persuade governments that it is the victim of armed aggression, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) was taking its time over San José's request for an injunction ordering Nicaragua to withdraw its troops and halt further dredging work. Costa Rica has since revealed that it has been building defensive infrastructure in the disputed area on the lower reaches of the San Juan river.
