COLOMBIA: Moderate alternative seeks lift off

Colombia’s centre-left Coalición de la Esperanza presented its electoral platform this week ahead of presidential elections in May 2022. The coalition took shape in February with the aim of providing a moderate alternative to the prevailing polarisation of the Uribista right, which brought President Iván Duque to power, and the radical left led by Gustavo Petro. But since violent social unrest erupted in April, it has heightened political polarisation in the country to the benefit of Petro, who most closely identifies with the demands of the protesters, and the Coalición de la Esperanza has as yet failed to gain much traction, leading to some internal divisions.
