BOLIVIA: Áñez testimony puts Mesa in the crosshairs

The testimony of the imprisoned former interim president Jeanine Áñez (2019-2020) has put another former occupant of the presidential palace in the crosshairs of the left-wing Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS) government. On 15 June, the attorney general’s office summoned former president Carlos Mesa (2003-2005) to testify in relation to Áñez’s claims that he was instrumental in the events leading to her declaring herself interim president – an action which the current government, led by President Luis Arce, regards as a “coup” against former president Evo Morales (2006-2019).
