NICARAGUA: Opposition begins to take a stand

As is the case every year the ruling Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional (FSLN) held celebrations to mark the 19 July anniversary of the overthrow of the Somoza dictatorship (1936-1979), a regime which many of its detractors now compare with the government led by President Daniel Ortega. With some who fought alongside Ortega in the revolution now behind bars amid a crackdown on his opponents, in the latest sign of democracy concerns ahead of the 7 November general elections in which he is seeking another term, three opposition groups have said they will not participate as the requisite guarantees are not in place, dealing a further blow to the credibility of the process.
