GUATEMALA: Giammattei declares another state of prevention
Guatemala’s President Alejandro Giammattei last week declared a two-week state of prevention to begin on 14 July. He claimed that the measure, which suspends certain constitutional guarantees and restricts public gatherings, was necessary to curb the rise in coronavirus (Covid-19) infections as new cases continue to surge, with a record 4,233 new daily infections registered on 18 July. His critics, however, point to increasing discontent and protests calling for his resignation in recent weeks over the government’s poor handling of the pandemic and vaccine roll-out. This is also a cause for concern for the Pan-American Health Organisation (PAHO) which, on 14 July, pointed out that, along with Honduras, Guatemala had “yet to vaccinate 1% of its population”.
