ARGENTINA: Mini cabinet reshuffle bolsters Kirchnerismo

Argentina’s President Alberto Fernández has opted to carry out an unexpected mini cabinet reshuffle. The stated objective was to foster political ethics by requiring any cabinet members interested in participating in the 12 September open simultaneous and mandatory party primaries (Paso) that will return candidates for the 14 November federal legislative elections to resign from their posts in order to do so. The real aim appeared to be to promote the unity of the ruling Partido Justicialista (PJ, Peronists) ahead of the electoral process. However, Fernández’s new ministerial appointments are likely to exacerbate divisions between moderate PJ factions and the more radical leftist Kirchnerista faction. This risks alienating the non-Kirchnerista Peronist electorate.
