Weekly Report - 27 January 2022 (WR-22-04)

MEXICO | Energy reform. US Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm raised concerns about the electricity reform being pursued by the Mexican government during a visit on 20 January, coinciding with its debate in congress [WR-22-03]. Granholm held talks with President Andrés Manuel López Obrador as well as her Mexican peer Rocío Nahle, leading senators, and representatives of the energy industry. In a statement released after her visit, Granholm said that in each meeting she had “expressly conveyed” the US government’s “real concerns with the potential negative impact” of the proposed energy reforms on US private investment in Mexico. López Obrador repeated his line that energy disputes with affected private renewable power companies would be dealt with on a “case by case basis”.
