DOMINICAN REPUBLIC: Minister’s murder throws spotlight on gun crime

President Luis Abinader declared three days of national mourning in the Dominican Republic on 6 June after the environment minister, Orlando Jorge Mera, was shot dead by a childhood friend in his own office. Abinader said the crime had shaken Dominican society and instilled in him a conviction that more must be done to campaign against violence and gun crime.
