MEXICO: PRI old guard turns on Moreno

The past few weeks have not been good for Alejandro Moreno, the national leader of Mexico’s opposition Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI). First came the leaked audio recordings, which purported to capture Moreno having conversations implicating him in corruption. Then came the particularly poor performance for the PRI, within a disappointing showing for the whole Va por México opposition alliance, which also comprises the Partido Acción Nacional (PAN) and Partido de la Revolución Democrática (PRD), in gubernatorial elections on 5 June [WR-22-23]. Now members of the party’s old guard are publicly questioning the PRI’s future under Moreno’s leadership. Moreno met with former party presidents on 14 June in an attempt to broker peace.
