MEXICO: Mysteries abound over Manzanillo port robbery

It reads like a plot from a hit television show. In the early hours of 5 June, a group of around a dozen armed men broke into a freight storage area near the Mexican port of Manzanillo in Colima state. After gagging the security guards, the men surveyed the goods on offer and made off with at least 16 shipping containers, which were reported to be loaded with gold, silver, and electrical items. Although it may have all the trappings of a popular Netflix show, this heist is causing some very real headaches for authorities in Mexico, with the Colima state government, customs authorities, the navy ministry (Semar – which is in charge of Mexico’s maritime ports), and Mexico’s federal government all scrambling to absolve themselves of blame.
