Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso has set up a clash with the opposition, after announcing on 8 August that he would not accept a judicial ruling ordering the release of imprisoned former vice president Jorge Glas (2013-2017). After the government accused Judge Banny Rubén Molina of contributing to “judicial anarchy”, the attorney general’s office opened an investigation into Molina’s alleged “usurpation of functions and simulation of public functions”. Molina was subsequently arrested on 9 August.
