PERU: Castillo comes out fighting

Peru’s President Pedro Castillo is fighting tooth and nail to prevent a constitutional complaint presented to congress by the attorney general’s office against him from prospering. Castillo’s legal team appealed to the supreme court on 17 October to annul the complaint, which accuses him of leading a criminal organisation, influence peddling, and collusion, on the grounds that it contravenes the constitution. Castillo delivered a national address on 19 October denouncing the complaint as part of a plot to remove him in a coup, while announcing that he would take the fight to the Organization of American States (OAS) to “defend democracy and prevent the rupture of the constitutional order”.
